A New Furnace

We have a maintenance contract with Consumers Power. They will come and repair any of your gas appliances. We called them last October, the exhaust fan on the furnace died. A week ago the furnace didn't go on but Hubby cycled the power to the furnace and it started up again.  He called Consumers to check it out. The man came and before looking at the furnace said, "This is an old furnace we don't want to put any more money into it." (28years) He then went to the basement and condemned our furnace (which was working at the time), shut off the power and turned off the gas.  Hubby complained that it was zero degrees outside.  He said "Have a nice day." Today we are having a new furnace installed. Sort of an unexpected expense.  We don't recommend the maintenance contract with the energy company.

Who would've thought having the right people check out your furnace would be the wrong decision. There's no one to blame here as you did the right thing by calling them; what they could have done for you is let the old run until it dies. Maybe they were playing safe with contract legalese. Either way, this was an unneccessary cost on a perfectly working unit.

I think you did the right thing by just replacing the old furnace with a new one, instead of trying to make it run again. After all, it's 38 years old, so perhaps it's about time to replace it. Anyway, I hope your new one has a warranty that will guarantee a lifetime service.

That's right. Take a stand. Don't settle for anything else. The best thing you'd want to get out of everything is not only efficiency in terms of getting your appliances to work right, but also for it to be fast and with the least exerted effort, which will result in a much better-performing technology to go with them all. Thanks for sharing!
