The Last Rose of Summer

Today was a perfect day. Mom and I went out to lunch and did a little shopping. I was going to help her clean her cupboards but we decided to save that for a colder, not so nice, day. We still have lots of tomatoes coming, green peppers too, and lots of eggplants. The roses are still budding but I need to cut down the black eyed susans and maybe the beebalm too. I know the cold weather and the first frost are not far away.

I have tons of beebalm (which I always call "bergamot"---I think it's the same thing). Why do you cut yours down in the fall? Is it just a kind of fall cleanup thing or does it help it in some way?

I was just going to clean it up. It is our first year, dosen't it die to the ground anyway?

Yes, I'm pretty sure it does die completely back by the end of the winter. I just don't like to give up my flowers, even if they are just the left-over brown centers of flowers.
