Hubby has been busy feeding the birds and squirrels. Don't tell the other Master Gardeners that he feeds the squirrels. His theory is that if he has corn out there for them, they won't dig up his tulips. ( Just to be sure he put medicated foot powder on the ground over the tulips). Over the winter we get fox squirrels, red squirrels and gray squirrels, the chipmunks hibernate. We see goldfinches, woodpeckers, nuthatches, cardinals, blue jays, sparrows and juncos. I understand that titmice winter over but we haven't seen any. We went to a lecture on outdoor lighting and we are inspired to look for a way to accent our rocks at night.

Sounds like a great tip, and I'll pass it along to a friend who loses lots of bulbs each year to the squirrels. Speaking of which, you certainly do get a variety of squirrels out there in Michigan! I think we have only gray squirrels here, which include a fair number of solid black squirrels too--very pretty. On the Eastern Shore of MD there are red squirrels (or is it fox??). Who can keep all that info in one head? Our favorite animals to watch this winter are the foxes and the hawks. And a suspiciously large fox-like animal that we think might be a coyote. They are around here -- they are basically everywhere I think.
And we get the same birds as you. Do you have chickadees? They are a big percentage of our regular backyard birds. And the cute little Carolina wrens winter here. Adorable.
Did you guys install those rocks yourselves? If so, hats off!
We had Soulierre Stone Co put them in. They did it with 2 very muscular men and a bobcat.
